“Overthrowing the Government”: Socialists Tabling Outside El-Sayed Event Endorse Violent Revolution on Camera

Journalist Cam Higby recently came across two supporters of Abdul El-Sayed who had set up a table outside a campaign event featuring the candidate.

When Higby started asking the pair about their views, the conversation quickly took a dramatic turn.

The two eventually grew visibly agitated and made clear they did not want to keep answering his questions, but not before making some shocking statements.

Asked what they were advertising, one of the supporters said they were with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization and explained that the group believes “the only way to create change in this country is via revolution” rather than through reforms. When Higby asked what kind of revolution, the supporter answered, “Overthrowing the government.” Higby followed up by asking whether that meant violently, and the supporter replied, “Yeah.”

In a post sharing the hidden-camera footage, Higby said the El-Sayed supporters told him he should be “KILLED for being a capitalist” and called for a “VIOLENT overthrow of our government.”

On its website, the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) describes itself as “a national organization of revolutionaries fighting for socialism in the United States.” The group says it is organizing a united front against “monopoly capitalism” as its general strategy for revolution in the U.S., and that it is recruiting and building toward the creation of “a new Communist Party based on Marxism-Leninism.”

The exchange offers a look at who is backing El-Sayed and other DSA-style candidates. It also raises the question of how the media would have reacted if members of the Tea Party had said something like this on camera back in 2010.
