London Marriage Record and DOJ Filing Put Ilhan Omar's "Brother" Marriage Allegations Back in the Spotlight

A newly surfaced British marriage certificate, published alongside a federal court filing, is bringing fresh scrutiny to longstanding allegations that Minnesota "Squad" Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar married her brother, a claim she denies.

According to a Friday report from The Dallas Express, the document covers a 1997 marriage in London's Camden district. It names the bride as Leila Nur Said Elmi and lists her father as Nur Said Elmi, whose occupation is given as "Military Officer." The certified copy is dated October 19, 2026. The New York Post, which published the certificate, described Leila as Omar's possible sister, and sources told the Post they believe the father named on the document was Omar's late father, Nur Omar Mohamed.

However, the certificate concerns Leila's marriage and does not identify the parents of Omar's former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. On its own, it does not establish that Omar and her former husband are siblings.

Separately, federal prosecutors used the Elmi name for Omar in an October 21 filing about sealed search warrant records, referring to "Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar." The motion does not explain the factual basis for using that name. Omar's office pushed back in a statement to Fox News Digital, with a spokesperson saying Thursday, "Ilhan Omar is her real name."

The government's motion responds to three applications, from fourteen press organizations, The New York Times Company and Judicial Watch, seeking access to sealed materials tied to the search of Omar's Washington residence. Prosecutors asked for a single response deadline after the search warrant's execution was complete, citing reasons filed under seal, or alternatively a common deadline of November 9. The applicants opposed the extension. The motion was submitted under the name of Jeanine Ferris Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, and reflects the government's position on access to records rather than any judicial finding that Omar committed identity fraud.

The marriage allegations themselves go back roughly a decade before the current federal investigation. In August 2016, MPR News reported that a Hennepin County marriage certificate showed Omar legally married Ahmed Elmi in 2009. Omar said at the time that she was still legally married to Elmi but physically separated, was pursuing a legal divorce, and forcefully denied they were related, calling the insinuations that he is her brother "absurd and offensive."

Omar also described a separate relationship with Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her three children. By her account, the two applied for a marriage license in 2002 but never finalized it, separated through their faith tradition in 2008, and reconciled in 2011, the same year she described a religious divorce from Elmi. The distinctions between religious ceremonies and civil marriage records have long complicated public discussion of her marital history.

The current inquiry has brought federal investigative power to questions that once circulated mainly through news reports and political criticism. Omar's attorneys have demanded the return of property seized in the search and disputed the investigation's legal foundation, according to The New York Post, while the Justice Department has rejected their procedural accusations, saying its personnel complied with court orders and legal obligations.
