Steve Hilton, the Republican candidate for governor of California, appeared on Bill Maher's show Friday night and drew a round of applause from Maher's liberal audience when he promised to clean up the streets of the state.
California is in clear need of a cleanup, as years of one-party Democratic rule have turned the once-beautiful state into a disgraceful mess.
Hilton has even taken his campaign to Skid Row, the notorious homeless area of Los Angeles, to show how bad conditions there have become.
On Maher’s show, Hilton laid out his plans, promising, “I’m going to give you $3 gas.” He noted that other states have gas prices starting with a $3 and pledged that Californians’ first $150,000 would be free from state income tax. “We’re going to clean up the streets, finally, in California,” he said, vowing to “END MASS homelessness.”
Hilton also promised to roll back regulations so homeowners can build in their own yards without having to go through what he called “the insane regulations.”
Earlier this month, Hilton toured Skid Row with Fox News Digital, walking past sprawling homeless encampments, trash-covered sidewalks and signs of drug use while questioning where billions in taxpayer funding have gone. He spoke with one homeless woman who said she had gone to jail “a few times,” and a local volunteer who said she voted for Mayor Karen Bass accused the mayor of failing to deliver on her promises to address homelessness.
If Hilton can win applause from Maher’s crowd on this issue, the question is whether he has a real shot. At the very least, he is making an honest effort, and California needs a change in a big way.
