President Trump said Friday that Republicans would be “very happy” if former Vice President Kamala Harris ran for president in 2028, though he said he doubts she will.
“I heard just a little while ago she was leading the Democrats fairly substantially,” Trump told Benny Johnson in an interview on the sidelines of his midterm rally in Daytona Beach, Florida. “I would say that we’d be very happy if she were the candidate, but who knows?” He added, “I don’t think it’s going to happen, but it might. You never know.”
Trump also predicted a strong showing for Republicans in Tuesday’s midterm elections. “This party is getting better and better all the time,” he said, pointing to the size of the rally crowd. “I think we’re going to have a great Tuesday.”
Trump’s comments came as a new poll showed Harris leading a hypothetical 2028 Democratic primary with 34 percent support. California Gov. Gavin Newsom was a distant second at 20 percent, followed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at 11 percent.
Harris has also been previewing her 2028 platform. In a recent interview on the “My Body. My Pod.” podcast, she called for expanding the Supreme Court to 13 justices. “We also need to take a critical look at the Electoral College, fight for statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C.,” she said.
