THAT WAS FAST: Seattle’s New Socialist Mayor Katie Wilson Already Facing Recall Effort

Just eight months after taking office, Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is already the target of a recall effort focused on her record on public safety.

A North Seattle couple, Melinda Jacobson and Dale Osterud, recently filed formal charges with King County Elections accusing Wilson of neglecting her duty to maintain peace and enforce city laws. They point to several issues: the deadly shooting at the Bite of Seattle festival that left three people dead, persistent crime and public-safety problems in neighborhoods such as North Aurora, Belltown, and the Chinatown-International District, the decision to deactivate or remove CCTV cameras in certain areas, and Wilson’s move to force the resignation of Police Chief Shon Barnes amid an ongoing homicide investigation.

Jacobson has said she initially gave the new mayor the benefit of the doubt but now believes Wilson has failed to prioritize public safety and is “still floundering.” The petitioners argue these actions demonstrate a dereliction of the mayor’s core responsibilities.

Wilson’s office has dismissed the effort as lacking merit and highlighted progress on other fronts, including expanded crisis-response services, more shelter capacity, new school-meal programs, and affordability measures.

The filing is only the first step in a multi-stage process. Prosecutors must review the charges, after which a judge will decide whether they meet the legal threshold for a recall. If approved, organizers would then have 180 days to collect roughly 69,000 to 70,000 valid signatures from Seattle voters to place the question on the ballot. Historical precedent shows most such efforts in the region fail to reach voters.
